A lot of interesting points in this thread. I've never quite understood the Roxy attitude towards bass players in the sense that they got through so many over the years, all with different styles. It's almost as if they thought that the bass player didn't really influence the Roxy sound.

I'm not sure if Gary Tibbs was ever a full member of Roxy. On the F&B tour he was behind Bryan, Phil and Andy on stage, standing next to Neil Hubbard.

The story about Herbie Flowers I've heard a few times and I believe it to be true. I also remember Bryan saying that that he played bass on the early Manifesto sessions. I'm sure that if Roxy couldn't run to paying for a bass player when they recorded Manifesto Phil would have been the better choice to play bass.

As regards session/shadow musicians for the forthcoming tour this may have a contractual element. All of our heroes are now 70+ and it would make sense to have ready rehearsed replacements if someone became ill so that the tour didn't have to be cancelled. Obviously this doesn't apply to Bryan. Just my thoughts!

I'd like John Porter "the one that got away" as BF describes him I believe.

Interestingly, when Bryan read out the long long list of bass players at the RRHoF induction he omitted to mention Tibbs. Probably just an oversight, but Tibbs did contribute more than most in appearing on Manifesto & F&B albums and the tours.

Bryan did indeed mention Gary Tibbs in the RARHOF speech.

8-)

Apologies, don't know how I didn't notice Gary Tibbs mention, it was clear enough. Poor to miss Chris Thomas's uncredited contribution to 'Street Life' though, [j/k]. Phil also played bass on 'Over You', so yet another bass player. Oh & Chris Lawrence played 'string' bass on 'Sunset' if we want to be completists. PS - didn't Peter Paul, [name?] play on an early radio session?

Let's not get into the bassists since 2001.

Back in the day he was such a great addition to the line-up. As mentioned, he was a bit of a nod to the punk era, he was young and he was also uber-cool. He should never have responded to that call to 'Stand and Deliver', but then with hindsight the time he had remaining with Roxy was minimal anyway.

Someone earlier asked about Chris Spedding not playing on the tour, a friend of mine is a big Sharks fan and he told me they're doing a 50th anniversary tour shortly, so Spedding will be on that.
