The whole album, As Time Goes By, is a vocal tour de force.

Hipsters,
Salient remarks from thinking Ferryistas.
ATGB is indeed a ‘Tour de Force’ and it’s an album that demands to be listened to in its entirety.
Nothing transports W2 into his imaginary world of beautiful, elegant women partying in an Art Deco cocktail bar quicker than this disc.
Windswept remembers ‘where and when’ he first heard it.
It was a Sunday in September 1999 and the Windswepts were enjoying lunch in a beautiful restaurant on the Danish Riviera when a very elegant hostess spun said disc in the background.
The Windswepts looked at each other and simultaneously said “Ferry”!
Although the arrangement was ‘traditional’ there was no mistaking his distinctive vocal. He was back after a five year hiatus.
W2 got our hostess to play the whole thing and couldn’t wait for the stores to open on Monday. It was the beginning of our hero’s great partnership with Colin Good. His maestro director of music.
Nobody (sauf Robert Palmer) covered the great American songbook like those two.
Halcyon days mes amis. Halcyon days !
Salutations,
Windswept.

Thanks, John for putting us up to this, a most difficult test.

This has been tough, and my initial draft was dumped final choices were updated.

The reason I think my list might not feature the usual suspects (VP, ITIS & CM, etc) is I feel BF did not find his voice until after the first Roxy Music album. I think by the time For Your Pleasure was being recorded Ferry knew what sound he wanted for his songs and how to get it.
FYP contains some amazing vocal performances, Beauty Queen being my personal favorite. But DTS, SC & IEDHAH are also stunning. His delivery improved again for Stranded and I feel plateaued on Country Life for the 72-75 period.

For me, Ferry delivered his best vocal performances on his solo outings from this period. I believe he had been hearing these songs and their lyrics in his head (and probably in the tin bath!) for years. Unlike much of Roxy’s work which was put onto tape in the studio.
Unencumbered by group politics and developing the group he was free to just be "the singer" on these albums, here he found his full range and power.

As Time Goes By has been given some excellent coverage on this thread. Rightly too. It is a masterpiece of vocal delivery.

For my sins, here are my choices: Of course, I will look back on this and change my mind.

1972-1975
Sympathy for The Devil
Fingerpoppin’
It Ain’t Me Babe

1976 – 1982
She’s Leaving Home
That’s How Strong My Love Is
Manifesto

1983 – 1988
Zamba
Day for Night
The Right Stuff

1989 – 1996
Answer Me
The Only Face
Chain Reaction

1999
As Time Goes By (the whole album)
Special mentions:
Where or When
Miss Otis Regrets
Sweet and Lovely

1997 – 2006
Sonnet 18 (1997)
This Love (2000?)
A Fool for Love (piano version)

2007 – 2018
Tender is the Night.
Zamba
Soldier of Fortune

Live recordings:
So many favorites to choose from.
Psalm & Mother of Pearl (Musicladen 1974)
If There Is Something (VIVA!) The Country Life & Siren vocals were awesome.
For Your Pleasure (Siren tour)
Ladytron (Glasgow 1988) His most successful duet?
Make You Feel My Love (Newcastle 05/03/2020) Just stunning!

Cher Tryptich,
A nice selection! To make you feel my love was simply fantastic at RAH as well.
So now we are waiting for the spring, the end of the pandemic - and the release of of BF live 2020!
Bonne soirée à tous!

Cher Tryptich,

W2 would like to join with Le Magnifique, Oberon, in congratulating you on your selection. Particularly your brilliant inclusion of ‘A Fool For Love’ (piano version) mais with two caveats :

D’abord, Windswept can’t believe that you have omitted ‘Boys & Girls’ from la dernier periode. Surely the finest example of our hero’s mature voice. N’est-ce-pas ?

Deuxiemement, W2 can’t understand your preoccupation or indeed the preoccupation of the normally tasteful Oberon with ‘Make You Feel My Love’.

Windswept knows we are supposed to be talking vocal delivery here but MYFML is honestly not the vehicle to judge him by. It is that rarity from Zimmy - an average chanson!

Indeed, had our hero released the fabulously haunting ‘Gates Of Eden’ at the same time as ‘The Tottenham Shouter’ released ‘MYFML’, she would have been knocked of her perch. Sans probleme !

Pouvez - vous expliquer le deux faux pas s’il vous plait ?

Salutations,

Windswept.

Dear Rendezvous & Windswept2
In addition to leaving out Boys & Girls, I neglected one of my favourites. In Your Mind.
I do love both of the above. However, Ferry himself said that he wanted the production as a whole to shine on B&G's and it was his intention to bury the voice down in the mix.
There are of course triumphs on both albums. STL, The Chosen One & Windswept. Then IYM, Party Doll and TJ.
I think Ferry's voice is best when stripped of production in a raw state.
The Gates of Eden was also one that was on my first draft. Along with many more stunning vocals.

I love these discussions, I only wish to hear more devotees choices.
;)

Cher Tryptich,

W2 agrees violently with you that Ferry’s voice is at his best in its raw state.

Prior to ATGB, W2 may have thought differently. he was so seduced by the ‘sound’ of B&G, Bette Noire and Mamouna that in some regards, he was as much in love with the ‘total effect’ as he was with the songs, the voice and the musicianship.

Indeed, the only deviation over those years was ‘Taxi’, an album that W2 come to like more and more.

Looking back, in Windswept’s not so humble opinion, the only album where the production doesn’t do the songs proud is ‘Bette Noire’ . There are some real gems on that album and W2 would love to see him remake it.

That said, as time has gone by since ‘ATGB’, his ageing voice has taken on a resonance and gravitas that has been showcased in some great songs: ‘Reason Or Rhyme’, ‘Tender Is The Night’,’Johnny And Mary’ and the fabulous Bitter Sweet version of ‘Boys & Girls’.

Hopefully we’ll see more in this style going forward.

Salutations,

W2

Ps. W2 would like to particularly salute your inclusion of ‘A Fool For Love’ (piano version) which is an absolute diamond in the rough and is pleased that you had the wisdom to include ‘Gates Of Eden’ on your first draft !
