So it must have been about one year ago that I saw the first trailer for The Great Gatsby at a 3D showing of Prometheus. All I can say is I went wow. Now first off I can't stand Baz Luhman's films. I hated hated hated Moulin Rouge even though Nicole Kidman was quite striking in it. Anyway the visuals in the TGG look too good to miss. And I put that on the back burner of films too see. Time goes by the film gets pushed back and in the mean time our dear Bryan releases the wonderful The Jazz Age. We all know the rest. So last week after following all the YouTube films Bryan has released I downloaded Yellow Cocktail Music and love it to death. So last Sunday with my first free time in months I drove 45 miles to Prescott Arizona to see The Great Gatsby in 3D. Boy was it worth the wait. I really really loved it. I can't quite get the really negative reviews. I though the casting was great. Much better than 1974. And the framing device of
having Nick in rehab made the visuals make so much more sense.
It is just a memory. Now to the music. I think that there has been a lot of hubbub made over the modern music in it. It didn't bother me and I thought it kinda worked in the party scenes. There really wasn't
much on any one song through out. I think it's a ploy to sell the soundtrack. Bryan's music figures much more in it and even that is snippets here and there. But I found it was perfect for the movie. The back to black was used well, once again just a touch of the chorus. Thank god Luhman had the sense to cut out the Andre 3000 part of the Beyonce version. Should have been a B&B duet anyway. That's what it ends up as anyway. Love is the Drug blink and you miss it.
All in all see it in 3D if you can as it really is a stylish dream-like version that really does take advantage of the medium.

45 miles to Prescott? Whoa. You are out in the wild methinks!!!

Your review is engaging and instructive and makes me think I should find way to see TGG...

No, Don't. We're all pretty upbeat about it, at the minute.

Cheers, none the less.

Mrs Smudge & I had a rare trip to the cinema last holiday Monday; we plumped for GG on the basis that she'd enjoy the costumes and me the music!

In practice the film was well enough acted to distract us both from our original aims. The music was a perfect fit (you'd certainly miss it if it wasn't there), but I wasn't distracted from the visuals or too hung up on who was singing or playing.

And we were the only viewers who sat through the extensive closing credits, of which the music ones came just about last and in which the BFO featured prominently.

I've bought the regular soundtrack CD (there's nothing extra by the BFO in the deluxe version), but if you want to experience the BFO's full input, I think you'll need to wait for the DVD.

I saw the film last Sunday. On the whole I thought it was very good. Though I fear it's not long for our local picture house, there were only 10 or 12 watching :(

The first third of the film....scene setting etc I thought was overlong, it should have been cut down a bit. But once the story really got going it was excellent. The scene in the swimming pool towards the end made me jump even though I knew what was going to happen! Leonardo DiCaprio & Toby Maguire were both great as was Carey Mulligan.

Blink and you would have missed LITD, but it was good to hear all the other music that BF had a hand in. Like Smudge & Mrs Smudge hubby & I stayed to the bitter end. Nice to see him given the first billing over all the other music.
