Clearly TGG is not going to lose money. But the article is a bit bi-polar on exactly how profitable it will prove to be. The main thread of the article is very upbeat, but in the middle of the story this no-so-insignificant caveat is dropped into the mix: "Profitability is another matter, affected by unknown factors, including how compensation for Mr. DiCaprio and Mr. Luhrmann was structured. The movie was also expensive to make; executives who worked on “The Great Gatsby” contend it cost about $105 million after heftier-than-normal rebates from filming in Australia. Global marketing costs, after factoring in partnerships, ran $90 million. (Some insiders say those costs were substantially higher.)" A few weeks back I predicted a world wide box office cum of $400 million but this is proving to be far too optimistic. I've been watching the stats posted on boxofficemojo.com and right now they have the US box office at $128 million and the "foreign" (i.e.non-US) at 120 million. I think the world cum will definitely reach $300 million but wouldn't be shocked if I fell short of the the $330 million estimate given in the NYTimes article. All that said, for BF the movie has been a Huge PLUS and given his on-going career a big boost. |
