Would anyone else like to hear BF sing Hey Little Girl by Icehouse?

Yes, definetely.

It could be compared to hearing The Rolling Stones sing "Rebel Rebel" by David Bowie.

Celluloid Heroes (The Kinks)
Blue, Red and Grey (The Who)

Out of Time - Stones/Chris Farlowe
Nothing Compares 2 U - Prince/Sinead O’Connor
I’d Love You To Want Me - Lobo
It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way - Jim Croce
Don’t Know Much - Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville
Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart - Gene Pitney
A Time For Us (Romeo & Juliet Theme) - Andy Williams
Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers (Elvis piano version style)
Woman - John Lennon
Stuck On You - Lionel Richie

That’s an album I’ve chosen! :D There’s so many songs I listen to and think “oh I wonder what a Bryan version of that would sound like!”

Many many more as well but that’s just off the top of my head.

You named my favourite song of one of my all time heroes, The Kinks, Robertron. Great lyrics by Ray Davies - and really a long song (6:22). If you take Bryan's version of A Hard Rain you can imagine how he would have changed the Kinks original (positively, of course).

Ray Davies had a certain preference for jazzy songs (Sunny Afternoon) and the Music Hall/Vaudeville style, especially in the 1st half of the 70s (Holiday, Mirror Of Love etc.). Maybe that would be the better choice for a Bryan Ferry cover ... BTW: Andy has recorded Waterloo Sunset with The Metaphors.

@Scott: I'd Love You To Want Me (Lobo) - nice proposal, why not.

At least two songs from me:
Wrapped Around Your Finger (The Police) and
The Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie)

To go back to Roger's original question, Icehouse's Iva Davies seemed to make a deliberate effort to sound like BF on that single, so I'm not sure that BF would be keen on (and might conceivably feel insulted by) the suggestion that he might like to cover a "Ferry impersonator"! ;)

BF was able to put his personal stamp on his many "ready mades"; I don't think he could do much with a song which already sounds so much like him.

As a vaguely related issue, I've sometimes wondered who could lay claim to have recorded the definitive version of Heart On My Sleeve, given the similarities between the two 1976 recordings (i.e. by BF for his Extended Play and by the composers Gallagher & Lyle). The composers' single and BF's EP were both released in August, I believe, although the former came from an album released six months earlier.

BF's version of HOMS was released as a single (instead of The Price Of Love) in the USA; perhaps someone here knows whether it was also an August release?

Hi Smudge,

Yes Iva did have an agenda to sound like Roxy and using Rhett Davis must have helped. ID is a classically trained musician and I remember him describing how he could use his knowledge to produce the sound that he wanted on a record. Of course Guy Pratt played with at one point. I've always liked Icehouse and I think that ID is a particularly underrated guitarist.

Re: Smudge's question about 'Heart On My Sleeve'. I recall an interview that Gallagher, or Lyle, (or both) gave around the time of the release of their version. They said that they had written the song for Bryan and only released their version as a single as he delayed releasing his.

Hipsters,
‘The Great Scott’ has made some terrific suggestions.
W2 would certainly lend his vote to ‘Out Of Time’ and ‘Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Time’ - both would be excellent adjuncts to ‘Love Letters’ if our hero decided to turn the EP into an LP.
Windswept lui-meme would add Bennie Benjamin’s ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’. Both The Animals and Nina laid down great versions but our hero would knock this one out of the park.
Another great chanson that was suggested some years ago by a learned Ferryista was Richard Thompson’s masterpiece’For Shame Of Doing Wrong’’. W2 has always been a huge supporter of this idea not least because IWNSHO the definitive version is yet to be made. Sandy Denny came perilously close but a sprinkle of Ferry dust would turn this into an anthem for the dispossessed.
En tout cas - W2 espere que notre heros revendiara en studio.
Salutations,
Windswept
