Post subject:  Bryan Ferry - Help me (Live)

I was asked to play some Roxy/Ferry music at the recent Glasgow Convention.

This was done within the confines of a small band using backing tracks for some keyboards, bass, drums and some backing vocals.

The first thing that I wanted to do was to have a female singer, so that there is no chance of a comparison with Mr Ferry.
I also wanted to do something less known from the Roxy/Ferry canon.

I chose Help Me, not necessarily a favourite of mine, but more as it has never been done live and as an obscure track that Bryan did for a soundtrack.

This is our own spin on Help Me

Musically excellent, John and a wonderful vocal too. A good choice. Loved your guitar solo.
What else was on your set list?

Thanks Richard. Help Me is not everyone’s favourite, but one of the reasons I chose to do this song was that it was an obscure, tucked away song in the Ferry canon.

Although there are a lot of die-hards at the convention, we were also aware that there are a lot wives, husbands, friends who want to hear the hits. It was a case of balancing that.

We looked at songs that neither Bryan or Roxy had performed live before, so within the set were: Help me, Is Your Love Strong Enough? & No Strange Delight.

We also wanted to put our own spin on some songs too, so we did a sort of piano/vocal intro & first verse to Pyjamarama, and similar to Angel Eyes. These will all end up on YouTube eventually as we edit each video as we had 5 cameras recording it all. It takes time song by song to edit them.

Katie is someone local to me that I am producing an album for and her late father was a huge Roxy fan, so she was delighted to do the gig. Oliver is of course the sax player in Roxy Magic, and also a member of the convention committee. I did guitar & keyboards. I did backing tracks with bass, drums and some keys at home. It was neither practical or efficient to rehearse a full band for this so the backing tracks were the compromise.

This video is of the opening of the show where I used themes from two Roxy tracks to seque into the opening song. One of those themes ‘Trash 2’s intro had never been performed live before.
