Maybe I'm late to the party, but I've just read Dr. Simon Puxley's 1976 biography of BF's early career and I can't recommend it highly enough.
Written under the pseudonym of Rex Balfour (Puxley obviously had a keen sense of humour - the nom de plume sounds like a '60s porn star).This short book covers Ferry's early life, the formation of Roxy, the band albums up to and including Siren and the first three solo works.
It's a great piece. The good Doctor demonstrates a unique understanding of what Ferry was trying to achieve both with Roxy and in his solo career and gives us a special insight into one of the most important musicians of our times. One thing that is highlighted is Ferry's desire to deliver a complete package. Puxley quotes Bryan as having said; "I believe very strongly in giving a complete deal. Something not only has to sound good, but also has to feel good and look good" and boy, hasn't he stayed loyal to this mantra. Wether it's a Roxy or solo outing he has achieved excellence on all dimensions. It was and is always a complete show and not a gig - those of us that are fresh from the Olympia extravaganza can testify to that!
All in all,the book is entertaining, informative, extremely well written and includes some excellent black and white photos of those turbo charged years.
Great stuff and what a shame the guy isn't around to help Ferry pen the definitive biography.
If you haven't already,get hold of a copy and enjoy because it is required reading for all Ferryistas.
