There are no surprises anymore. It has become a seemingly random setlist with a hodgepodge of songs. One wonders what`s the philosophy behind that ..

Hipsters,
Le Freak a bien raison.
When you examine set lists from previous shows, you can see the work that has gone into them. The way they ebb and flow and the way they are designed to create mood and atmosphere.
Windswept remembers being knocked out with the triumph that was ‘Frantic’ that came hot on the heels of 2001’s ‘Roxy Reunion’. Indeed on it went up until recent debacles when the whole thing got stuck with Groundhog and now this lot has been thrown together.
This is most unlike our hero - what goes on ?
This remains the question du jour.

Fidel Ferryistas,

Windswept fears this is more for those with prostrate problems than a serious attempt at dynamism .

I suspect that Tara has been revived in anticipation of the USA leg of the tour that has been billed as featuring the songs of the Avalon album.

I don't have plans to attend any BF gig this summer, so I'm not sure why I even care at this point, but it does seems as though the set list is now- if not not dull as dishwater in W2's poignant phrasing - a bland offering with little sparkle to rouse the spirits of the cognoscenti.

Sigh.

Cher DJC,

By nature Windswept is woefully optimistic and overtly enthusiastic.
Hence your ‘KoolAid’ descriptors were never far from the mark.

That said there comes a time when you have to speak truth to musical power and this is it.

The tour will and probably already has sold out - the wonga will roll in. The musicianship is excellent. The voice is clearly not what it once was but it remains distinctive and listenable. The boy has ditched The Englebert outfit and still looks the part. The reviews offer no new insights or appreciations but are broadly good.

So what’s the problem ?

For the casual fan or the corporate raider - none.

For the cognoscenti, everything. This damn set list is just the absolute worst. When you look at it, it in no way represents his career - either with Roxy or solo - it doesn’t build, surprise, swoop or swoon and the mystic just isn’t there. It is BLAND with a capital B.
It hasn’t been crafted it has either just been thrown together or emerged from Groundhog.

W2 remembers all the gigs of the past with such affection. Oh ‘The Thrill Of It All’. This time he is full of trepidation.

Salutations,
W2

W2:
You are the epitome of a true and loyal fan, so when you express (most eloquently) your concerns as to what the present tour has devolved into, we should take heed.

I hope for your sake that the upcoming RAH show turns out to be a good experience and worth the effort to get there...

The setlist seems to have settled. Once he has ruled out the songs that don`t function, he goes for those remaining for all it`s worth. It looks like he can`t afford any more mistakes. We can see how unhappy he gets. Like a tennisplayer he goes for the tried and tested so that he doesn`t risk to lose the game. I guess you all know this. That`s the reason for the silence at this site.

le freak:

fully agree.... but what is Bryans motivation then, just to fulfill the contracts? surely he is not hard up...
the setlist is very standard and risk-free. But it pleases the masses. Maybe us die-hard Roxy-Ferry fans are not on the radar, maybe he has sold his soul..... I believe only a Roxy-Reunion (like 2001) could set things alight again...

whatever, here's wishing all those (expecially our loyal and trusted W2) a good evening at the RAH and the other UK events...

Hipsters,

W2 applauds le freak’s insight but there is another element to this.

All of the great tours between 1999 and 2013 featured the Ferry/Good partnership and Windswept thinks Ferry felt very safe with Colin as musical director.

The shows benefited enormously from Good’s input. Who could ever forget the fabulous production values behind the ATGB set or the shimmering intro he wrote for ASFE or the absolute mastery on display at AEWBF ?

Good is the missing ingredient because as well as being a fantastic musician, he plays a lot in musical theatre.

Perhaps Windswept should have prayed to the Penshaw Gods for the return of the Goodster and a great show would have followed ?

Salutations,

W2
