Great review of the Oxford show Smudge!

Another review from Birmingham Symphony Hall, 20th May.

Hipsters,

C'est vrai, Monsieur Smudge a écrire très bien mais the current line up us now quite different and far from the 'Roxy Lite' of the US sessions.

Will they scale the dizzy heights of the 2001 Roxy tour, ATGB, AEWBF or BFWS? We will see and now that ticketmaster have deemed to print off the Brighton tickets Mr & Mrs W2 will be hot footing it to the seaside city of sin to find out.

One things for sure, all Ferry is good Ferry (except 'Is Your Love Strong Enough') and hopes are high. Our hero doesn't rest on his laurels and doubtless those Brightonians will rock their appreciation.

Salutations,

W2

I don't think Monsieur Windswept need worry about Brighton, it will be fabulous. Liverpool's art-deco Philharmonic Hall - a glorious setting for his kind of style - was a treat.
Every time I see Ferry, I fret that it will be devalued and, although he now looks like David Cameron's funky dad, it never is.
The Avonmore tracks worked better than I could have imagined and Midnight Train is outstanding live. Bete Noire didn't work so well but Stronger through the Years is a deeply mined gem.
As for his voice, it coped very well with a full-blown More than This, which I imagine is difficult to perform on stage.
And you all know how the shows end but, safe to say, everybody in the Philharmonic was dancing from the moment Love is the Drug began to Jealous Guy six tracks later.

Cher Jesmond,
I'm pleased Liverpool went so well. Hopes remain high and preparations for Brighton are progressing well with the exception of Mrs.W's outfit choice. She's narrowed it down to 14 possibilities and doubtless we'll be obliged to lug all to the city of sin just in case she has a last minute change of heart.
'More Than This' there is the issue of the set list. One of the problems about being towards the end of the tour is seeing your favourites come and go. I was really looking forward to the bar room version of 'MTT 'and now it's morphed into a full band fandango and 'Out Of The Blue' looks like it's been and gone.
That said, hopefully we'll be in for some surprises. I'd love to see him do 'Johnny & Mary' and given the eclectic nature of the Brighton crowd he might feel inclined to experiment (W2 continues to dream of a bar room version of 'The Name Of The Game').
Your comment about the Camster's funky dad made me laugh but has given me night sweats. It brings on a vision of Gideon Osborne on bass and Eric Pickles on drums!
Ever onward to Brighton.
Salutations,
Windswept

I particularly liked this one. Dom sums it up nicely.

I'm looking forward so much to the gig and set list. Fingers crossed. @bry: please keep hard core for Brighton. Bear in mind that Badgers clothes shop has framed the first 4 roxy albums and boasted them on their walls for years now. Brighton deserves a great gig. it's a natural home for Bry at his subversive best in the deep south. After all, not many miles from little bignor.
@ws2: I'm so looking forward to Mrs WS2's final choice of outfit ;)
