Andy Mackay
Interviewed by John O'Brien for VivaRoxyMusic.com

I recently had a discussion with Andy Mackay regarding his current studio activity. The Roxy Music sax and oboe player as well as the co-writer with Bryan Ferry for many Roxy Music classics like, Love Is The Drug, Angel Eyes & A Song For Europe is naturally keen to hold back on too much detail about the album until it is nearer completion and ready for release. Andy had said that the album is not at a stage yet where he could comment on the musical direction of the album or offer a release date.

Andy, I would just like to ask you about the new recordings you are doing and when the fans can expect to hear the fruits of this.

The album is tentively call 'London, Paris, New York, Rome', are these sessions for a new Andy Mackay solo album

ANDY MACKAY
The Paris London Rome idea has been around for a while, but is not the same as the current work. The recordings have a working title but no name tentative or otherwise. I would not call it a solo album, or indeed an album at all. I have been recording at Real World and mixing at The Hospital.

VRM
You are working in the studio with Paul Thompson again the first time since the Manifesto sessions in 1978/9, what's it like to be working with Paul in the studio again.

AM
It is always a pleasure to work with one of the world's geat drummers

VRM
Are there any other Roxy associated musicians working on the new album.

AM
Julia Thornton plays harp Chris Spedding has done a couple of sessions for me and Guy Pratt also has done a session.

VRM
Your website has been down for some time now, can we expect to see it back online?

AM
The new official Andy Mackay site is under construction and due online in September.

VRM
I was speaking to Bryan Ferry last week and I told him that Kylie Minogue was to cover 'Love Is The Drug', he had been unaware until then, his reply was 'I must tell Andy'. How pleased where you to hear that the song you co-wrote with Bryan is to have such a high profile cover.

AM
It has proved to be a tough and versatile song and I look forward to another version.

VRM
And finally in anticipation of what every Roxy Music fan wants me to ask right now is:
(1) How are the Roxy Music sessions coming along?
(2) When do you expect the album to be complete and released?
(3) Have you taken part in the songwriting?
(4) How would you describe the album in terms of sound and direction?

AM
We are contracted to deliver an album to Virgin next year

VRM
Andy on behalf of the many Andy Mackay and Roxy Music fans who will read this, thanks for taking the time for this interview.

AM
My pleasure.
