Bryan Ferry's fans are still slaves to his charm
Former Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry only had to slink on to the Waterfront stage in one of his trademark sharp suits last night and the crowd were in raptures.
With every seat sold out weeks in advance, it’s clear a lot of people hold Ferry’s music — both with the 1970s art-rock pioneers and solo — dear. Roxy Music classics like More than This, Avalon and Virginia Plain, were greeted like long-lost lovers, while Ferry’s own hits such as Slave to Love and Let’s Stick Together got a similarly warm response.
The music was performed on a sumptuous stage set by a lavish 10-piece band, including a fashionably bearded bassist, a multi-instrumentalist who looked like she’d just walked off a Robert Palmer video shoot and a trio of backing singers who seemed to have been teleported direct from Harlem’s Apollo Theatre circa 1962.
