Talking about the British rockband Roxy Music, the word « myth » is often used. Especially in the first half of the 70s, the band belonged to the élite of rockgroups who created a new style of music. A myth has the characteristic, that those who represent the myth normally are dead. Not the musicians of Roxy Music. And so the reunion-tour surely is the most self-willed comeback of the year.
Strictly said, it is not a reunion, but a more or less temporarily meeting-again for this tour. There are several, also economic, reasons for this tour. “ We got an offer to play 50 concerts” says Phil Manzanera. “ We talked about it and recognised, that only a few of our songs are regularly played on the radio.”
In 1983, after a North-America tour, singer Bryan Ferry offhandly dissolved the band. They left mourning fans with the longing for a reunion. However neither saxophonist Andy Mackay nor guitarist Phil Manzanera would have been able to reunite 4/5 of the band. This act required the leadership of Bryan Ferry. The often lingering Englishman made up his mind two years ago to try it again.
After having finished the recordings for his solo-album “As time goes by”, he supervised the digital restoration of the Roxy Music albums, which were republished in the last year.
“This made me feel, as you can imagine, a little nostalgic. It is nice, to play those songs again and I do not mind not to have new songs. It is just one of those dinosaurs-rock-tours”.
Wenn die Rede von der britischen Rockband Roxy Music ist, fällt oft das Wort «Mythos». Besonders in der ersten Hälfte der 70er-Jahre gehörte die Band zu den stilprägendsten der britischen Rockszene. Ein Mythos bringt es gewöhnlich mit sich, dass die, um die es beim Mythos geht, meist schon tot sind. Aber die Musiker von Roxy Music sind keineswegs tot. Und so ist deren«Reunited»-Tournee sicher das eigenwilligste Comeback des Jahres.
Allerdings handelt es sich bei Roxy Music gar nicht um eine Wiedervereinigung, sondern um ein - mehr oder weniger - temporäres Wiederaufeinandertreffen für diese eine Tour. Dafür gibt es unter anderem handfeste ökonomische Gründe. «Wir bekamen das Angebot, 50 Konzerte zu spielen», erklärt Phil Manzanera. «Wir haben darüber gesprochen und festgestellt, dass es nur wenige Stücke von uns gibt, die ständig im Radio gespielt werden.»
1983, nach einer Nordamerika-Tournee, löste Sänger Bryan Ferry die Band kurzerhand auf. Zurück blieben die Trauer der Fans und ihre Sehnsucht nach einer Wiedervereinigung. Allerdings hätten es weder Saxofonist Andy Mackay noch Gitarrist Phil Manzanera vollbracht, vier Fünftel der Urbesetzung zusammen zu bringen. Dazu bedurfte es des Sängers Bryan Ferry. Der oft zaudernde Engländer hatte sich vor zwei Jahren durchgerungen, es noch mal zu probieren.
Nachdem er die Aufnahmen zu seinem Solo-Album «As Tears Go By» beendet hatte, überwachte er die digitale Restaurierung aller Roxy-Music-Alben, die im Vorjahr wieder veröffentlicht wurden. «Das machte mich verständlicherweise sehr nostalgisch. Es ist schön, noch einmal die Songs zu spielen. Mir macht es auch nichts aus, dass wir keine neuen Songs haben. Es ist halt eine dieser Dinosaurier-Rock-Tourneen.» erd
